Be Better: Support Each Other in Our Struggles
Most people are not beyond a second chance, especially if we never gave them it in the first place. Yes there are exceptions, but I want to share with you a few quick examples of people who were not beyond improvement and appreciation.
- I have seen inflexible colleagues become empathetic listeners
- I have seen people struggling with crippling anxiety get help, and change their lives
- I have seen people who are homeless, purchase their own home for the first time
- I’ve seen the Technology n00bs, jump in head first and become a deep level product specialist out of sheer grit.
- I know authors who have sold their books as movie scripts decades after publishing.
- I had a toxic co-worker, change their approach to become a great leader
- I’ve seen an IT master step out, and become full-time stay at home dad.
- I have had an employee on the brink of being let go, turn them self around and be a leader to their team.
I know every one of these people personally, and I may or may not have been their colleague, but I am definitely their friend. It isn’t up to us to understand why people make changes, but it is on us to step up and support them. Remember that we become what we believe we are, but we also take directions from outside sources… So let’s strive be kind and treat each other ridiculously well.
“Man often becomes what he believes himself to be. If I keep on saying to myself that I cannot do a certain thing, it is possible that I may end by really becoming incapable of doing it. On the contrary, if I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning.”
