Taking Care of Others: Our Greatest Growth Opportunity
COVID-19 has changed the face of our world! In these last few months it has brought major companies to their knees, made the business world re-think their beliefs on the efficiencies of working-from-home, forced the economy to admit just whose jobs are truly “essential” to our society.
In the midst of this people are losing their jobs (~26 million Americans in 5 weeks – Forbes), driving an aging workforce into early retirement (Quartz), we are looking for ways to restore our humanity.
The COVID-19 Pandemic, and our participation as a species in each others survival, is the single largest shared human experience in human history! Let make something good of it.

If there is one thing I hope for all of us. I hope that through it all we unlock more humanity towards each other. One of the ways we can do this is by making sure that we spread good news around. Another is that we identify resources and opportunities for those who are struggling.
For those of us struggling with Anxiety or Depression during this period of social distancing take a moment and visit VirusAnxiety.com. This website is a collaborative project by Shine and Mental Health America and includes a host of resources to help answer concerns, help families with varying concerns, offer expert advice and meditative guidance. There are a variety of toolkits available to help you and those you love address the concerns of the current crisis. One of my favorite sections is the “Take a Break” area, filled with positive, fun, and uplifting distractions.
Along with this site, I would also like to recommend GetSilverLining.com. This site is a fantastic resource designed specifically for
- People who have been layed off recently
- Companies who have had to lay employees off
- People looking for jobs
- People who want to brush up on key skills
Along with access to the expected Job boards of various companies, they have their own profile process that you can use to submit your professional information. I tested it out and the process was exponentially more easy than most job search sites. This may sound corny, but the thing I loved most was that I didn’t have to submit my resume, and then write all of my job history a second time (The bane of most HR Job applicant solutions).
They also partner with companies who have made layoffs to deliver resources to those employees who will now be looking for new work. I would also recommend the Resources section to hiring managers and potential employees alike. It contains a trove of knowledge for those searching for work, and those who are looking to hire, but will need to use remote interviewing skills during this time of social distancing.
If you have an active job, and simply want to help people out, I would like to point out that Silver Lining has an ambassador program. “Silver Lining Ambassadors are volunteers that have committed to offering their expertise to help out members of the Silver Lining community.” I have applied, and I strongly encourage you to as well.
